Beta 9 of Mozilla Firefox 4 arrives, final version in Feb?

The ninth and possibly the last Beta version of Mozilla's Firefox 4 browser has been released and can be downloaded from Mozilla site for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It is anticipated that the final stable version would launch by February end.

The changes in this Beta include two performance improvements relating to the bookmarks and history list। Mozilla relates that a total of 662 bugs have been fixed in the Beta 9, which is not even half of the bugs fixed in the previous Beta 8 launched in December 22. The Beta 8 saw about 1,400 bugs getting fixed.

Mozilla is pressing developers hard for a February release but still many "hard blocker" bugs need to be fixed for the final release to be in time. Although a Beta 10 for Firefox 4 is still on the schedule, the Beta 9 could well be the last.

Mozilla's competitor Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 is scheduled to launch a release candidate this month followed by the final edition before March end. This would surely pump Mozilla to deliver at least the release candidate in February followed by the final product as soon as they can.

'Untouchable' launched on iPad

Yes... its true... New Indian graphic novel 'Untouchable' launched om iPad...
Liquid Comics, an entertainment company founded by three Indians, has announced the digital iPad release of "Untouchable", an original graphic novel exploring various themes of racial prejudice during the British Raj with a supernatural horror twist.
A printed edition of the novel by acclaimed writers Mike Carey (X-Men, Lucifer, The Unwritten) and Samit Basu (Devi, The Tall Tales of Vishnu Sharma, The Simoqin Prophecies), will also be released in North America through Liquid's publishing partner, Dynamite Entertainment in early December.
This is a horror story about the clash of cultures, and about a man whose mixed race left him without friends or shelter - until the day he met a demon who, in her way, was just as much of an outcast as him," said Mike Carey
"This haunting tale by Mike and Samit is the result of two of the most creative minds from the East and West working together for the first time," Liquid Comics Co-Founder & CEO, Sharad Devarajan added.
"The future of graphic novels is digital and as such, we are thrilled to launch this graphic novel digitally through the Apple iPad, in addition to bookstores through our publishing partner, Dynamite Entertainment."

Untouchable focuses on Vimal, new to England from his home in India, as he attempts to find his place in a society that refuses to accept him. Having never met his father, he is mocked by his schoolmates that he's the horrific offspring of a demon that impregnated his noble mother.

When he accidentally awakens Jara, an actual Rakshasa demon of sinister beauty and malevolent power, from a centuries-long slumber, Vimal's life takes a turn for the evil. Fed by the boy's anger and pain, Jara twists his trauma into a thirst for vengeance, offering him a 'magic' powder with which to exact revenge on his tormentors. But such gifts come with a price.

"Writing Untouchable was a dream come true for several reasons, the most important of which was getting to work with Mike Carey who has been one of my idols since I started reading comics, well before I started writing them," added Samit Basu.
Liquid Comics, an entertainment company focused on creating original stories and modern myths for worldwide audiences, was founded by entrepreneurs, Gotham Chopra, Sharad Devarajan and Suresh Seetharaman.

Supercomputing on smartphones... New app came

The new software works in cases where the general form of a problem is known, but not the particulars. It has slider bars that allow users to set the values for which they want the problems solved.
Researchers in MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering have developed software that can perform complex calculations in seconds on an ordinary smartphone that might otherwise be performed on a supercomputer. Although the software is for demonstration only, but it could pave the way for applications that let engineers perform complicated calculations in the field using their smartphones.
Although the phone requires a supercomputer to derive these initial equations, after that the phone would have the ability to execute them to a close approximation. According to the developers of the application, there are certain complex calculations that need to be performed in the field. While the general parameters of an equation might be known to them, they might not know certain specific measurements. These specific measurements will be entered into the smartphone.

Since the mathematical models on which these calculations rely apparently take up very little memory, many of such models can be stored, and any additional models can be downloaded from the field.

The software is available for download and it comes preloaded with models for nine problems. These problems include heat propagation in objects of several different shapes, fluid flow around a spherical obstacle, and the effects of forces applied to a cracked pillar.

Washing machine will run on junks... Indian brains made it

Sourabh Siyal and Tushar Agarwal, students of Christ College, designed a model which would pester people to take interest in environmental issues. Eco-wash, a washing machine was made out of junk material and ran on mechanical and kinetic energy, without the use of electricity.

"The junk materials include a discarded plastic bottle, which we used as a box to wash clothes. A pulley is attached to the plastic bottle to run the machine. The pulley moves with the help of kinetic energy and helps to wash clothes," explained Agarwal, who wants to be a scientific innovator.

"Our idea is to do away with electricity and come up with an alternative. The washing machine can be useful in big textile industries. We're planning to give our idea to one of India's leading garment manufacturing units," said Siyal, who too wanted to pursue research works in the field of science.

In another such example of innovation, four students of Outreach school, under the guidance of their Physics teacher developed an 'Earthquake predictor'. "The earthquake predictor is nothing but a borewell. The borewell is attached to a buzzer. The buzzer makes sound if the underground water level increases, which means that the movement of lava in the underground is moving at a faster rate, an indication of the likelihood of an earthquake. The fast movement of lava will force the water level to increase, which in turn will make the buzzer give out signals," said Subramanian K, a student.

Intel... The New Mind-reader...

A team at Intel Corporation is working on a new technology which will directly interpret words as they are thought, unlike current brain-controlled computers which require users to imagine making physical movements to control a cursor on a screen.
Dean Pomerleau, of Intel Laboratories, said, "The computer uses a form of 20 questions to narrow down what the word is." So a food related word like apple produces activity in those parts of the brain related to hunger. So the computer can infer attributes to each word being thought about and this lets the computer zero down on what the word is pretty quickly.
"We are currently mapping out the activity an average brain produces when thinking about different words. It means you'll be able to write letters, open emails or do Google searches just by thinking," Pomerleau said.
Don't know how much it will be knowlegable and how much risky. So, don't evevn think of something dangerous when you are sitting and using net in public... ;)
Well... preliminary tests of the system have shown that the computer can work out words by looking at similar brain patterns and looking for key differences that suggest what the word might be.
But, the best part... just imagine that you thought of the image to search and its on your screen...
